#HistoryLesson: Audacious Hope

Brenda Dixon Gottschild’s Joan Myers Brown & the Audacious Hope of the Black Ballerina

I’ve just started Gottschild’s “biohistory” which spotlights “Aunt Joan” founder of Philadanco.  Gottschild begins by providing an exacting history of black dancers (mostly in Philadelphia), their training, their struggles, and corresponding moments in civil rights.

A story of hope

I’m only a couple chapters in, but I’m blown away by Gottschild’s meticulous level of detail, timeline, and history of black dancing artists in Philadelphia from early cotillion lessons to today’s foremost black dancing bodies.
